Space Mining: Exploring Resources Beyond Earth
Could a future iPhone contain metals mined from an asteroid? Perhaps one day. Some asteroids contain metals used in electronics, but extracting them and bringing them to Earth remains a major technical and financial challenge. An asteroid-powered supply chain is still a prospect for the future.
From smartphones to solar panels, modern life depends on mineral resources. Earth Science Week 2026 (October 11–17) explores this connection with its theme, “Critical Minerals for a Thriving Society.” To mark the occasion, we’re looking beyond Earth to explore what space could offer.
